Lean Into Yourself, Always… All Ways
by Toi Smith

Welcome to our first Supermoon of 2023! This lunation asks you to be in relationship with your personal power and the ways that you tend to and care for yourself. The sign of Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, knows boundaries, structure, and self-discipline well. So this Supermoon is asking you to lean more into steady, slow, and embodied ways of being: more intention and presence, less instant gratification. This Supermoon in Capricorn—which is occurring as summer takes off in the Northern Hemisphere—asks you to lean into yourself and your abilities, and to lay a solid foundation for your growth: more inner resources, less outside influence. Move at the speed of possibility.

This lunation asks: Do you trust yourself?

If you don’t trust yourself, then who do you trust? Who do you trust when the answers are unclear? When there isn’t a clear, either/or answer? When you are aligned with fluidity and on a path lined with choices, do you trust yourself?

What would it take for you to trust yourself? Your real Self? What would it take for you to possess the resolve, the gumption, the audacity, and the strength to trust yourself? When will you stop making judgments that erode your ability to trust in your innate knowing and faith?

There is power in trusting yourself. There is freedom in being able to be steadfast with yourself.

Our thriving and survival depend on our ability to understand how we have internalized the interlocking systems of oppression and how they play a part in our daily lives. How are you a foot soldier for capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy, and imperialism? In what ways, both big and small, do you hand over your sovereignty to outside forces and, in turn, distrust yourself?

These systems—the interlocking systems of imperialist white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy—count on us not to trust or love ourselves. They thrive, prosper, and grow when we self-loathe and are distrustful of our innate power and inner guidance. Remember that guilt is a learned response built from social constructs that benefit most when you don’t, can’t, and won’t trust yourself.

Trust and self-love are both continual, intimate, and quiet practices. To undo the distrust that we’ve been socialized to hold, we have to practice existing in different ways within our everyday lives. We have to gently challenge ourselves to break up with the status quo that asks us to stay disconnected from joy, curiosity, and possibility.

What do trust and self-love look like in action? What do possibility and trust look like in action? Self-love begins with the everyday, the mundane. It begins with the simplest of steps.
